Do You Genuinely Need A Dewalt Impact Wrench?
A pneumatic impact wrench or air gun is a very useful tool for removing stubborn nuts and bolts. It uses a strong jerking motion to help free fasteners that were over tightened or that have rusted over time. Compared to a traditional wrench, this can be a real improvement, and can make difficult jobs far easier. There is a wide range of different types of impact wrench out there, pneumatic being just one of them. In this article, we will consider the alternatives and their relative merits as well as explain the function of the impactor generally.
If you are buying a cordless impact wrench then you are probably already aware of the versatility that a cordless tool brings to your work. The ability to work away from where power is available is a huge advantage in some areas. For example if you are running a mobile automotive mechanics business then a cordless wrench can add speed to your work, even if you are working at the roadside in the middle of nowhere, far from a power socket that a corded tool would need and definitely out of range of any large compressor. An issue to consider here is whether or not you bought spare batteries for the tool and if you did are they kept charged? Batteries always seem to fail when they are most needed and keeping spares is a wise choice.
The problem with electric wrenches is that they are a lot heavier than air guns. At the same time, they do not offer the torque that air wrenches are able to offer, which can put them at a severe disadvantage. However, air wrenches will still use the battery, which will mean that you need to keep it charged. Electric impact wrenches are generally more expensive than air guns, which can make it seem like they are not the best value for money. However, the electric impact wrenches come with a longer warranty and are also able to last for a lot longer. The prices will also differ between the companies that make these power tools.
While there is a lot of power within the more modern electric impact wrenches, the traditional air-powered version is found to provide the same level of powerful torque for ease of use. The overall performance of the tool is dependent on the air pressure that is within the air compressor. Since this can vary greatly, the power output can fluctuate significantly while in use. With the large amount of force that these wrenches can provide, they are the best at removing very large bolts.
While I really enjoy cordless impact wrenches because of their surprising power and portability, a lot of times it's not enough. I don't think I'll ever take the air powered gun out of my box because of its superior power and durability. Actually I wouldn't take either out of my box because they both have their places in and out of the shop. It really just comes down to knowing what you will need your impact wrench for. The portable cordless is great for small to medium torque projects while the compressor powered air impact is good for low, medium, and high ranges of torque.
